Barium enemas
A barium enema test is used to look closely at the large bowel and / or colon. The barium substance appears white on an x-ray, assisting in detection of any abnormal or irregular elements.

Barium swallow / meal
The barium swallow allows for images and examination of the oesophagus. The barium meal test produces images of the stomach. It is not unusual for both tests to be performed together. An x-ray of the area being studied is taken, the barium substance appears white on an x-ray, assisting in detection of any abnormal or irregular elements.
