Procedures / Intravenous Pyleogram (IVP)
What is the test for?IVP is a procedure used to detect any abnormalities in the urinary system, including kidneys, ureters and bladder. This test enables us to determine if there are any problems with how the kidneys function and ensure the urinary system is functioning correctly.
What is the preparation for the test?
For the best images you will usually be asked to fast for at least 4 hours prior to the test being performed.
How is the test performed?
Generally you will be lying on an IVP table on your back, although some images do require you to move on to your side or stomach. You should be fairly comfortable throughout.
Will I feel anything?
The screening itself will not create any feeling. You will probably be given an injection of x-ray contrast, which will show up on the x-ray within the kidneys. The needle which is used to inject the contrast die is very small and will be given in the arm or hand.
How long will it take?
About 40 minutes
