Bone Densitometry

Osteoporosis is a disease characterised by decreased bone density, increased bone fragility and consequent susceptibility to fracture. After menopause, a woman's risk of suffering an osteoporotic spine or femur fracture is more than that of a man. Osteoporosis is a complex disease that may progress for decades - there may be no symptoms until fractures occur. Bone loss is a major risk that can be modified in mid-life to reduce fracture risk. Bone loss can be treated, but it is difficult to restore bone once it has been lost. Early detection and intervention are necessary. Osteoporosis was once considered to be a consequence of aging. With new techniques for early detection osteoporosis management is available.
